Golden Rule #4 Server Technology and Stability

We have already touched upon the more important aspects of server technology you should consider. Here, we are going to mention a few more we believe that you should know about.

Server Stability
An estimated 70% of web servers run one of the many variations of the Unix Operating System, including Linux. They have a very good reason for doing so. That system is considered stable and secure.

Unless you have to, we suggest that you stick to Linux. Besides, it's cheaper and has tons of features!

The main thing to look for here as far as stability goes, is, does the Host Company have it's own Data Center? This becomes vitally important in the event of a crisis. You cannot afford to deal with a middle man if your website is down and it's Sunday night. You need the man who can effect change. On the spot.

Web Host Security
Are you thinking ecommerce? If so, the server you select must be able to encrypt your visitors' connections. This is done through a component called SSL or Secured Socket Layer.

Keep in mind, the security implications of picking the right server that was covered in a previous tutorial . You don't want to get this wrong.

The rule is, the more people sharing a server, the more potential for security breaches and other errors.

Other Server Technologies

These are usually called "features" so you know. We are going to list just a few here, but remember this is not a complete list. Always check with the provider for your needs.

Shopping Cart - Do they have one available? This may or may not be provided free oc charge. Check.

CGI Scripting Supported - Some do and some don't. If you need to run scripting on your web site, this is important.

24/7 Support - Very important on those crazy weekends when everything stops working.

Non-premium Phone Support - Important for anyone new to web hosting. It seems speaking to someone gets more problems solved than any other way.

99.9% Uptime or close to it - The margine for error is very small because a business cannot afford to go offline, especially for any lengthy periods.

Money Back Guarantee - Eventhough this is not a technology, we included it because of its' significance. This guarantee is important for more than the fact that you will get your money back. It tells you that the Web Host is willing to put their money where their mouth is.

As we mentioned before, there are many more applications available than are listed here. Here's a tip. Sometimes the Hosting Provider does not have it listed anywhere but it is still available. There's no harm in asking.
